      Hopefully she does.
I always spend a few moments on anniversaries like this, to remember the reality as opposed to the hobby.
      Thanks for your time,

I woke up this morning and the first thing I said to Susan was, "You know what today is don't you." She looked at me in disbelief at what my first words were, then replied, "Something to do with Jack the Ripper?" "Yes" I smiled, "Is it the anniversary of the first victim?" She asked. When I told her she was right she uttered under her breath "Oh my God!" and walked out of the room.

I always remember too. I think of Polly going out into the cold night with her jolly bonnet totally unsuspecting confident about getting her doss money

            Rest Peacefully Polly

              Mary Ann Nichols R.I.P.

As I have noted elsewhere, Madame Guillotine has a new blog entry on "The Murder of Mary Ann Nichols", the anniversary of whose death on August 31, 1888 death is today.

Yes, once again we are entering that phase of the year which marks the cluster of unfortunate anniversaries. I didn't realise until part way through the day, and it is sad to think of what was taking place on this day 124 years ago...

                R.I.P. Polly.

                Cheers,
                Adam.

This Saturday will mark 125 years since the dreadful murder of Polly Nichols on Bucks Row...and I thought it might be proper to set up this thread in advance, allowing for researchers to share their views here on this thread ....whether it was the first of the infamous skein...perhaps the second...any other ideas you may have on her murder.

In addition, any other special or specifically Nichols-related materials are welcome.

                  RIP Mary Ann Nichols....1845-1888

In memory of Mary Ann Nichols.

Spare me fourpence for a bed, Sir?

If I could live my life all over,
I'd keep away from drinking, I would do without.
I do things that I'm not proud of,
And someday I'll regret this life, I have no doubt.

And as a matter of survival, I sell myself so cheap most every night,
Though my standards won't impress you, keep your lectures for the press,
and spare me fourpence for a bed Sir, ..if you can tonight.

I sell matches when I can dear,
And beg and steal and borrow anything I need.
                      Desperate times for desperate people,
especially those who also have their kids to feed.

I know you don't respect me, and my kind always drink and swear and fight.
I have needs you won't address, you keep your lectures for the press,
and spare me fourpence for a bed Sir, ..if you can tonight.

My best years are all gone now,
I can't survive much longer, but I'm not alone.
There's a thousand more besides me,
some sleeping in the graveyard that will be their home.

Now if you have a heart dear, you can give me something costly shining bright,
Though you see I'm in distress, you keep your lectures for the press,
and spare me fourpence for a bed Sir, ..if you can tonight.

If I'd listened to the preacher,
I'd likely not be in this state I'm living now
I thought I knew it all dear,
but now I see I should have kept the temperance vow.

This old life just aint worth living, and the reaper stalks me every single night.
Though you think I should confess, save your opinions for the press,
and spare me fourpence for a bed Sir, ..if you can tonight.

Well the nights a rolling on dear,
and to earn a bed I should be on the streets I know.
If I can service any needs dear,
I'll take you to a spot somewhere along Bucks Row.

Thats all my spirit has to tell you, what happened next is not a pretty sight
But the reason for redress was also mentioned by the press,
....for lack of fourpence for a bed dear, .....I lay here tonight.
                      Regards, Jon S.

The theory that the murderer is a lunatic is dispelled by the opinion given to the police by an expert in the treatment of lunacy patients......."If he's insane
" observed the medical authority, "he's a good deal sharper than those who are not".

Yes Howard, I put that together about 10 years ago.

I don't dabble in rhyme often, but, sometimes I get the urge...
