  • In Memorium: Frances Coles

On February 13, 1891....Frances Coles' life was cut short by a killer, who some theorize as being Jack The Ripper.

    RIP Frances

Tomorrow...on Sunday, it will have been ( as Stan Reid has already mentioned on the boards elsewhere ) 120 years to the day that Frances Coles was murdered in Swallow Gardens.

While some consider her a victim of Jack The Ripper and others a victim by by person unknown.... or even Thomas Sadler.....one thing we all know is that whoever did cut her throat that morning didn't swing for that murderous act.

            Hi Chris, all,

I too have always like that sketch - it reminds me of the actress Lisa Geoghan who played PCW Polly Page in The Bill.

              Wow- very alike!
I always thought Liz Stride might have been similar in looks to Kate Buffery.

R.I.P Frances Coles indeed. A few illustrations from the newspapers of the day--

The first illustration shows a prettier and younger girl than the mortuary photograph or even the other newspaper illustration shown here indicates. The murder scene was a passageway called Swallow Gardens under a railway arch in Tower Hamlets between Chamber Street and Royal Mint Street. Here the victim was found at 2:20 am on the morning of Friday, February 13, 1891 by P.C. Ernest Thompson 240H. As you will see, in the close up of the bottom panel of the series of sketches, the murder scene is erroneously called "Sparrow Gardens." In any case, the location is just east of the Tower of London where the Royal Mint was located. The last illustration shows seaman James Sadler with Coles in White's Row before she was killed. Sadler was arrested on suspicion of killing Coles, went to trial for her murder, but ultimately was found not guilty.

I believe the Coles murder site is the only one that still exists pretty much as it was then.

                          Yes, RIP, Frances.

Which must mean that three days ago was the 126th anniversary of Henry Tomkins's untimely death.

                          RIP, HT.
