Emma's story was so tragic. I have great sympathy with her statement that her friends and family would not have understood any better the difficulties of her last days, than they understood things before. Then I wonder if the legal case recently shared here, of a woman with a horribly abusive husband, referred to this Emma Smith. RIP indeed.

In the early hours of April 3rd 1888 Emma Elizabeth Smith was attacked in Whitechapel. She subsequently died of her injuries and the Whitechapel Murders began.
I am inclined to think Emma Smith was an early Ripper attack. Also I don't think she was attacked in the street by a gang. Just my opinion.

Hi Rob
I agree. That said I still have concerns
Can you expand on your opinion?
My interest is in the geography and the walk from poipular that night that might have taken her from commercial road through the area around greenfield st towards brick lane

Hi Jeff,
It all depends on what sort of Lodging House number 18 was. If it was a mixed Lodging House then I have a feeling that Smith was attacked there.
If it was women only then that theory goes out the window.

I was thinking more Mary Ann Austin, who was attacked at 35 Dorset Street. When the Police found out the lodging house people took them to a different cubicle and were unhelpful.
What I am thinking with Smith is that she was attacked in the lodging house but was told to tell anyone that it happened outside and somewhere else just to keep the Police away from the premise.
