  • The Dead Horse Forum

Which area of the Case....either aspect, suspect, you name it....is an area that you feel is or has been done to death?

Is there too much talk about graffiti for your liking? How about overkill on letters to the press and police? Speak up and give the old gray mare one more whack.

        Hi Howard

I think the Maybrick Diary takes a lot of beating for the amount of hot air expended.

Whilst we are discussing dead horses, just what was the name of Diemshutz horse??

I guess you argue that most, if not all of the suspects have had their fair share of breath devoted to them.

I think Stride's been done to death - if you see what I mean.

Diemschitz's horse may have been called Hoss the Horse, or as he was a pony maybe he was Percy the Pony. Or Louis may have named him after himself and called him Schitz.

              Let's bump this up guys:

I think the idea of a conspiracy, coverup, the police closing the investigation too early, and such like are things that keep cropping up and are done to death.

A Brief List...please add on when possible...

                1. The Conspiracy
                2. Maybrick
                3. The Graffiti....sniff... people seem to be agin' its provenance.
                4. That the police weren't interested in apprehension after 1892....where that idea sprang up,I don't know...and I've seen that mentioned too,Big Jon.
                5. That "unfortunate" meant you stubbed your toe, lost your keys, bumped your head or anything other than prostitutes.

How, when you refer to Maybrick, do you mean the man himself as being the Ripper, or the Diary?

What annoys me most is the misconception that the investigation was shut immediately after Kelly's death!

No, Big Jon...its simply that it seems less discussion regarding Maybrick surfaces. I have no issue with the Maybrick thing one way or the other....I usually steer clear of it...but of course, people have a right to talk about it. I wasn't trying to insinuate that its a "dead horse" here for those who wish to discuss that aspect of Ripperology.

                      Jon:

The press reports after the Kelly murder seem to have diminished in number and how the Case was presented in the Press whenever it was discussed....at least to me. Maybe I'm wrong.

                        Ah right.

I haven't studied the press reports enough to know that, but according to Scotland Yard Investigates (Rumbleow and Evans) the on the ground investigation continued till at least Spring 1889.

                          Jon:

In addition, I have heard that financial considerations ( the amount of dosh to cover the overtime or regular hours the PC's were putting in ) were factors in what is assumed or actual towards this "diminishment" of police patrolling...which ostensibly began in March of 1889. I heard Dr. Fido mention that around 5 years ago or so.

This was also mentioned on one of the (three) documentaries that featured John Grieve....the one with John Ross of the Black Museum.

                            Hi Howard

I think we in retrospect might think the police activity and press reports dropped off because we know or at least most of us think the Kelly murder was the last. But the police and the journalists could not have known that so I believe reports of various men being apprehended or sighted continued on, along with of course continued alleged letters from the killer.

Not at all, Jon. Such things get hardly a mention these days. And far from being flogged (cropped?) this horse is simply resting in its stable, eating organic hay and chocolate and Polo Mints.
