A very sad position to find ourselves in.
I am happy to make a small donation annually and to help in the running of the site

As I wrote elsewhere on here today,
I've just seen this, and I agree, it would be utterly devastating if this site was to be lost. So much has been put into by How, Nina, many researchers and members.
Wouldn't charging members a small annual subscription keep the site going? I'm sure members would be only too pleased to support it. Nothing is free in this world, and if it is, someone is paying for it somewhere.
      Just a suggestion. Regards, Amanda

I'm very pleased to say that nine people between them have offered enough donations for us to renew the main site hosting in November!

Yes - thanks to all those who have generously offered financial support and other kinds of help to keep the site going.

Of course, it is also a reflection of the value placed on the content of the site, which has been built up over so many years through Howard's hard work, and through bearing the cost of the site himself over a long period.

              That’s good news, Chris.

Things have been a bit quiet of late. We members need to start posting a bit more. And guests - don’t hide your lights under bushels, sign up and have your say.

Thanks. That's very helpful. Although we have been offered the money we need for the renewal in November, if anyone else is willing to donate, that would allow a reduction of some of the larger contributions that have been offered. So please do contact me by private message if you would like to offer a contribution.

Haven't been over here for a good while, just heard the news. Put me down among those willing to make a modest contribution.

Thanks very much for your kind offer, which is noted.

Having looked into the options, my recommendation is that we should migrate the site to the cloud hosting service offered by vBulletin (the company that wrote the software the site runs on). We could then dispense with the Bluehost hosting account, which accounts for the bulk of the current cost of running the site. This service would include the maintenance and updating of the software and daily backups by vBulletin (as well as any additional downloadable backups we requested). The web address of the site would remain the same, as should the URLs of existing forum pages and posts. The long-term cost of the cloud hosting, given the current bandwidth requirements of the site, would be $360 a year (or $40 a month). (If the bandwidth increased significantly, we might need to move to a more expensive package, but at the moment we seem to be comfortably in that bracket.) There is an additional charge of $240 for migrating the existing database to the cloud hosting, but that includes a 6-month extension of the hosting package (so the additional charge for migration is really $60).

On that basis I would recommend we move to the cloud hosting at a cost of $280 for the first seven months. I would suggest also having a cheap basic hosting account which would allow us to put other material online, such as a static archive of the discussion pages and - I hope, though I haven't yet investigated the details - the linked images that are currently hosted at Photobucket (at a cost of $140 a year). The annual cost of that hosting account would be about $80.

By comparison with what we had considered previously, which was $760 to renew the existing Bluehost hosting for a year, these costs would amount to about half of that now to set things up for the next seven months, and half of it next Summer to continue for another year. If people are happy with that, I suggest we can go ahead with people making half the donations they offered previously, to the PayPal account with this email address:
jtrfcommittee at gmail.com (obviously make that into an email address in the obvious way)

Any comments and questions are welcome, either here or by private message.

I'm pleased to say that, as two people have made generous donations equal to or larger than the amounts they previously offered, we already have enough to cover the payment for the cloud hosting.

So please put a hold on any more donations at the moment. If everything goes according to plan, there will be another opportunity to contribute next Summer.

The identity of the donors will remain anonymous, but in the interests of transparency the amounts and times I was notified were:
                              100 dollars 10.23 on 4 Nov
                              150 pounds 16.50 on 4 Nov
