                              BATES, Thomas

                              Daily News
                              October 2, 1888
                              **************

An old gentleman, one of whose eyes was carefully bandaged, stepped forward from out the throng, and inquired, with rough courtesy, what the unexpected visitor required to know. Mutual explanations resulted in the owner of the damaged eye stating that his name was Thomas Bates, and that he was the watchman of the house, and had held that post for a good many years. Off and on, said he, "Long Liz" had lived with them for five or six years, but her real name he never knew. She was a Swede by birth, and some years ago lost her husband, who was shipwrecked and drowned. He had always known her as a clean and hardworking woman.

Bates was the watchman at 32 Flower & Dean Street.
