        Spike = the casual ward of a workhouse. (Google search; I hadn't heard it before)

        I'd be curious as to how this came to be used as slang for a workhouse.

          Seems to be related to the spike used in picking oakum (Google)

          I was going to say it was the police helmet or bill/receipt spike but I think Currebell is referring to the workhouse

              LVP = Late Victorian Period

              Correct, it refers to the workhouse, I got it from Londons, People of the Abyss...

                    Right CB -the spike in the LVP referred to beng in a workhouse (aka the spike)...on the /in the spike ....and it did refer to the spike used for picking oakum

                    I've got some great stuff on this subject and will post later as have to get to work tomorrow - sadly x
