I sympathise, Howie. I had shingles in the summer of 2011, round my chest area, front and back, and it was horribly painful for weeks on end. My back still itches as a reminder of that time, although the pain did go eventually. My GP at the time told me I should have come to her for antivirals before the rash appeared - which would have been tricky considering that was the first major sign that something was wrong!
I believe you can only get shingles if you've already had chicken pox, which most kids in the UK get at a young age. The virus lies dormant, ready to strike when you are under stress or your immune system is not 100%.
You can't catch shingles from someone with chicken pox, but you can get chicken pox - if you've never had it before - from someone with shingles. So you should avoid contact with babies, or adults who haven't had chicken pox, as it can be more serious for them.
