I've done it a couple of times, but paying £24.99 for a UK death certificate or birth certificate makes me feel like I've just had a run-in with Dick Turpin.

Is it cheaper on the UK side of the pond?

If you go via the GRO it’s just £7. for a digital copy. The last two I got arrived on the 3rd working day after I applied for them. It’s not always that quick, though, it’s supposed to be 4 days and occasionally they are a bit late.

I don’t imagine your geographical location would make any difference for online copies, but I suppose if you want them sent overseas there’s the additional postal costs to consider.

The GRO site is also still a free way of finding out the maiden name of a child’s mother.

Remind me to move this thread into the Ripper research forum. I can't do it at present.

        Thanks !
