Some truly amazing, some profound, some familiar, some interesting, some WTF?, and a few good for the caption contest.

Union General Ambrose Everett Burnside (1824–1881). He had the reputation of being a political general. He served as Governor of Rhode Island 1866–1869 and U.S. Senator from Rhode Island 1875–1881 and also Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic 1871–1873.

After the pro-South riot in Baltimore on April 19, 1861, when Federal troops on the way to Washington were attacked while marching between train stations, habeas corpus was suspended in Maryland by the administration of Abraham Lincoln. Union troops under Burnside occupied the city throwing Mayor George W. Brown and Police Commissioner George Kane and others thought to be pro-South behind bars. Of course Maryland, with the Federal capital of Washington, D.C. on its border, could not be allowed to secede. Burnside's artillerymen on Federal Hill trained their guns on downtown Baltimore.
