Im not sure you are understanding the message RJ. What do you think it is exactly?

I'll try and give you a further explanation.

You produce your guy/gal, a talking head on the TV With an opinion. Then you try and impress everybody by tellingthem where they work.

The I produce some guy (like this guy for example https://www.jthomasmcclintock.com/aboutdrmcclintock ...who probably taught your gal and who has a different opinion https://www.whsv.com/content/news/Lo...507528741.html).

And we end up, like Ripperology has done forever in matters where the Ripperologists are singularly unqualified to give an opionion, playing some kind of idiotic Top Trumps and getting nowhere near the truth (not that there is in reality some kind of binary "truth" decision).

Or alternatively..... and this is probably new for you although it shouldnt be as this has been my "message" for quite a while now....you avail for yourself of the system thats actually in place to avoid this. Its the system where the journal actually provides a means for the author addressing the concerns of a reader. You dont even have to go to the trouble of writing an email, you could alternatively do it online using Tools designed to facilitate getting answers (https://pubpeer.com/search?q=10.1111%2F1556-4029.14038) and ask the authors why so many people apparently disagree (or agree with them depending on the website you land on) with them.

Alternatively, keep trawling the internet to find things that support your opinion (thats called an "information bubble" in case you didnt know - its the internets primary purpose these days) as opposed to trying to find out anything for yourself or filter the information you surround yourself with something approaching a critical mind.

I really wish all these experts would do the professional thing and drop Dr Peat an email explaining their reservations. Then the matter could be resolved with a simple "Expression of Concern" notice or a retraction. They know how to do it. They are aware of the process. They are ethically committed to it as scientists. And yet...the paper remains there. Still no comments on other systems for commenting either.

The silence is at the moment deafening. Maybe its just easier to get on the TV and puff up your ego rather than doing the right thing. If they are so concerned about the hundreds of thousands of people who are being misled...maybe they should try and get this paper out of circulation instead of appearing on TV?

I'm not sure you're getting your message across, Mr. P.

Here is yet another expert weighing in via the media. Dr. Dawnie Steadman, professor of anthropology from the University of Tennessee's famous "body farm." What could she possibly know about forensic testing that a specialist in sport's medicine doesn't?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HN8nZgs6bTM

I think what most of these "experts" realize is that tens, and probably hundreds of thousands of people saw the misleading news reports of the "shawl," yet less than .0001% will ever bother to read an obscure forensic periodical.

Are they unworthy of hearing an opposing view?

Evidently Drs. King, Steadman, and Sir Alec Jeffreys, among others, don't think so.

99.999%+ of humanity have never even heard of HR.

Having a fascination with a serial-killer who mutilated prostitutes is what will get you strange looks down the pub

Louheilanen's comment about the only people interested in keeping this 'industry' alive were tour guides is a little less sensational, but just as silly, as what Trevor said.
Thats true. I wish someone would provide an authorative, contextually correct (ie. as in what the Finnish words mean in reality) translation as the 6 translators I tried provided significantly different versions.

Its sad that this has become the standard refrain and hopefully it wont be supplemented by "see what they did to that poor Rubenhold girl".

I agree that the Beggs, Rumbelows will continue to provide level headed advice to interested parties. I worry that that however is drowned out by less considered but more vocal opinions and activities.

At the moment, and probably for the first time since the diary, I'd be very reticent indeed about admitting in public to even the slightest interest in anything ripper.

    Lars:

In most circumstances, many of which just as important if not as media-intense as the DNA/Rube stories, people in this thing of ours have been asked for assistance in research/advice in Ripper, LVP, crime, or other areas and could walk away satisfied. A 'silent majority' of sorts. That will continue.

The only thing we can do after Trev spilled the milk is mop it up and continue on our diligent way.

Nothing to do with my attention as thats not my point (I wish you would stop calling into question my attention when thats irrelavant to the point!!!!) Howard!.

If you paid attention to my post you would see the point is that it:

    Doesnt matter what we think.

Problem for us now is that anyone outside can say that Ripperology and engaging with them is likely to end up with people shouting odd things at you.

I protested strongly at what went on in relation to Twitter - but as I say, its not what we think that counts with respect to how reipperology is being percieved.

Anyone can...with some vailidity and a growing body of "evidence" - say (and not just based on that Twitter incident) that Ripperologists cannot be engaged with in a reasonable way.

    Its horrible but its true.

If you had paid attention, Lars...you'd know that everyone associated with Ripperology thought the 'virbrator' remark was out of order.

I think you mixed up a Word or two RJ. My Finnish is crap but together we can figure it out:

Jari: To be honest, Ripperology was a little butthurt(?) that I would not let them shout "virbrator" at me on Tweeter.

Host: Oh oh! I read about that in the Times!

    Jari: Presis.

Thats more like it. I might have gotten "little" wrong.

My Finnish is a little rusty, but I believe Dr. L was refusing to answer the interviewer's questions unless he submitted them through a journal with a peer review process.
