  • Ron Pember (1934-2022)

The actor Ron Pember has died at the age of 87. Here is a report of tributes to him:

He was probably best known for his role as Alain Muny in the late 1970s BBC drama Secret Army (later travestied by the sitcom "'Allo 'Allo!"), but he also co-wrote a musical, "Jack the Ripper" in 1974. Some information about that is here. Surprisingly, an album of the musical featuring the original London cast was released for the first time in 1975 and is still available. It is not cheap, but the online reviews are so enthusiastic that I'm half tempted to buy it.

Sad news, I remember him well for his appearences in Rumpole of The Baily where he played a small time crook, who in Horace Rumpole's words "beleived shops should be open at all hours, prefrably with the aid of a jemmy"

      RIP Ron

Here is Monique (Angela Richards) singing "If this is the last time I see you" for her former lover Albert (the late Bernard Hepton) in the last episode of Secret Army, with Alain (Ron Pember) looking sombre in the background:

An obituary in The Stage mentions his Ripper musical:
In 1974 he co-wrote, directed and composed the musical Jack the Ripper, which started out at the Players Theatre and then transferred to the Ambassadors. Published by Samuel French, the musical has proved popular with amateur companies ever since.

Strangely the Guardian has just published an obituary, more than a month after Ron Pember's death:
