  • **The Murder Castle** : 'A Place To Stay' All Three Episodes

By May 1893, Chicago's World's Fair is in full swing. Dr. H.H. Holmes welcomes visitors to his hotel, a block-long structure designed to lure young women into his clutches. Before long, he makes each mysteriously vanish, never to be seen again.

This series is well done but runs at the speed of a soap opera with lots of long ads in between segments. What I have seen so far portrays a humanized Dr. Holmes, doing what he did for understandable though perverted reasons. I am caring for a person who is very ill and that person watches a lot of this sort of program. My patient could not follow the story, I believe because it ran so slow. I told my patient the whole story but there was still a disconnect.

The drawn out action, I think, does much to weaken the overall horror that was H. H. Holmes. Imagine a JtR program that took an hour to build to one crime and then lengthy aftermath. Overall this series mentioned here is good but a bit tiring IMO.

      Anna....thanks for your critique.
I could always deal with a lengthy build up for a Ripper or possible Ripper victim story....if we had knowledge of the time prior to the murders as we do in the Holmes case ( to a degree, because Holmes is primarily responsible for the material we are aware of...and much of it is probably self-serving).
I'm jaded towards the Holmes story( ies) because of that dreadful 8 part series and the fact that most of the Holmes story is a myth ( 200+ victims...him being anything other than a murderer for financial gain..etc).

I suppose a big problem with the series is that if one is unfamiliar with the story, then much time must be spent learning the story with the slow format. I think that was part of the problem with my patient. Two hours in and my companion didn't know we were watching a story about a serial killer. By that time I think Holmes had dispatched two women. That was the way Holmes changed girlfriends but there is so much extraneous, day to day filler that to learn from the series it is necessary to invest in the hours and it would be helpful to keep a body count. I was wondering how long it would take to really drive home the point that Holmes was a SERIAL KILLER, at least three victims, etc. More intense narration would help the series.

The pace reminds me so much of a soap opera that I halfway expect some of the murdered females to come back to life.
