  • **J.S. Walsh The Invincible**

Found in the recent issue of the Whitechapel Society Journal 1888 ( Number 55, April 2014), Wolf Vanderlinden has written yet another very good article regarding the person who may have been the Ripper suspect who "Sir Melville Macnaghten (biography)...
appears to identify the Ripper with the leader of a plot to assassinate Mr. Balfour at the Irish Office..."
Many thanks to Wolf for organizing the material into a solidly written article.

    Byrne

Hello Howard. Thanks for posting that.

Do you recall Mrs. Byrne's role in the Phoenix Park murders?

    Cheers.

      Lynn;
      Offhand, I don't recall...
I went through the Christy Campbell book and its sort of surprising that Walsh only appears in the book once.

        Walsh

Hello Howard. Thanks. Molony does not list him, nor my IRB history.

Mrs. B helped smuggle the knives used in the murders.

Anytime you wish to discuss Campbell, I am ready.

        Cheers.

          I've got the Campbell book...oh wait...oh yeah...packed away...and my memory sucks...

Getting increasingly grouchy, if not curmudgeonly,

            Oh ho, oh ho.

Hello Dave. Not to worry. Campbell will eventually come. (heh-heh)

            Cheers.

              Hi Howard,
You have J.T. Walsh, but I believe his name was J.S. (John Stephen) Walsh. There,s an account of him in France in 1888, when on his mission to assassinate Balfour, in Cook 's book "M" and you'll find assorted references to him in the 1883 press when an informer identified him as the organiser of the Cavendish murder.

                      informant

Hello Debs. Thanks for posting that.

Interesting to see Captain John McCafferty's name come up. I have been pursuing him for some time. There are some rumours that he was given to violent behaviour.

Do we know whom the informant was?

                      Cheers.

Is John McCafferty the same person as the Edward McCaffrey in the article Debs posted ?
Two different surnames and two different first names....

                          different

                          Hello Howard. Thanks.

No, McCaffrey was a different bloke and involved in Phoenix Park. I think Molony has a photograph of him.

                          Cheers.

                            Hi Lynn,
I'm confused-where does John McCafferty's name come up?

Edward McCaffrey is also Edward McCafferty in some sources.

How, it's a memo written by Mallon taken from HO files -not an article- but yes, I'm confused about Lynn mentioning John too. I thought I was missing something.
