Hell hath no fury like a former valet even if that coveted spot lasted for only a fleeting moment.
The gent's spiel sounds scripted...and very familiar.

    Meet Jim Maguire....

This Maguire does not appear in Tim Riordan's "Prince of Quacks".

In late 1868, Tumblety was in Pittsburgh. In 1869, he was in New York, Jersey City, London, back to New York and in San Francisco during 1870. It does not appear that Tumblety was in St. Louis during 1869 as Maguire declares.

Not that Maguire's story amounted to anything anyway.

Could Tumblety have been the person who wrote the letter of complaint to the Board of Health ?

What a tumble from the swank St. Louis hotels to this, eh ?

I believe there was some question as to where the mountebank was living shortly after his initial stay at Mrs. Macnamara's. Could this address ( 23 Stuyvesant St. ) in the East Village ( Manhattan) be the answer ?

              What it looks like today.................

Just a follow-up to that story:

Tumblety was happy with the way Joseph Pulitzer's newspaper, The World, had presented the George Davis incident to the public. Tumblety ended up mailing this personal letter to the editor.

                          The World (NY)
                          August 21, 1889

                          Prof. Tumblety Writes "The World."

To the Editor of The World.

I am reminded of a duty I owe you by seeing in the country press the frequent reference to your successful efforts in my behalf and I now return you thanks, many and cordial. Before you undertook to have justice done me all was dark, and there seemed no possibility of exposing the villainous conspiracy that surrounded me on every side. But from the moment you volunteered to investigate and probe into the matter the rascals fled at your approach and truth dawned until its zenith I stood forth a free and honest man. It is, therefore, no wonder that the press of the land recognize you as the most enterprising of journals and the best friend of the innocent and injured. Your many efforts towards exposing fraud and wrong doing in unearthing rascalities have made your journal famous, and long may it remain so -- the poor man's friend, the honest man's aid, foe of the wicked and the cowardly. Electricity is the only twin sister of THE WORLD enterprise. Both are brilliant and beautiful.

                          Francis Tumblety, M.D.
                          New York.
