"Dr. Tumblety has about given up all hopes of recovering his valuables, and does not, naturally, entertain a very exalted opinion of this city of hot water and professional thieves."
Doesn't this suggest that Tumblety was still in Hot Springs on that date?
If Tumblety was still in Hot Springs on that date then he likely hadn't travelled back to New York to kill Carrie Brown on the 23rd/24th of April.
I was reminded of this suggestion, that Tumblety might have killed Brown, by glancing through Mike Hawley's book. I remember that some time ago he brought this possibility up on Casebook and it was pointed out to him (I think by Jonathon Menges) that we don't know where Tumblety was at the time other than he might still have been in Hot Springs. I pointed out that we have one (likely two) excellent description(s) of the murderer and he wasn't Tumblety. Apparently Mike decided to ignore this evidence and went with Tumblety as the possible murderer of Brown (there's those pesky facts and evidence again).
