    Hi Howard,

We're still celebrating my Mom's 88th birthday around here. But I'm going to take a break from the party, and I will take a stab at answering your question. Mind you, I'm doing this solely on my fading memory, and I'm not double-checking with my files. But here it goes anyway.

The first reference about Tumblety being involved in the Whitechapel murders came from a news dispatch from London dated Nov 17, 1888. That news dispatch was printed in a few newspapers in America the following day on Sunday Nov 18th. The Chicago Daily Tribune was one of the periodicals that printed it.

That's enough work for my brain today. Now back to the cake and ice cream.

Anyone know the date of the first mention of Tumblety in an American paper during November of 1888 ? Failing that, the first mention you can remember regardless of whether it was the earliest ?
