  • Stephen Herbert Appleford

Today's Daily Mirror, (Oct 31st 2012 UK) features a blink and you'll miss it sidebar with the headline "RIPPER WAS A SURGEON FROM ESSEX." The theory, presented by Prof Eduardo Cuitino of Uruguay, states that Stephen Herbert Appleford was Jack the Ripper. It is claimed he was 36 in 1888, that he had started on a killing spree in 1881 after his mum died, and that he was responsible for knifing a woman in London in 1882.

The short article ends with, "He died childless in 1940 at the age of 88. He probably killed himself."

I can find Appleford at the Old Bailey testifying here,

Searching 19th Century British Newspapers online, we see Dr. Appleford testifying at numerous trials, but nothing to say that he had murderous tendancies.

Is this a case of another notable Victorian being accused wrongly?

      Hi Mike

If the Old Bailey 1882 knifing case is the one in which Prof Eduardo Cuitino claims Appleford was "found nearby" and "later vowed she cut herself", it seems to be a clear case of domestic violence, in which the wife took up a knife and her drunken husband tried to get it out of her hand which might have ended up with her either being knifed by the husband or herself, perhaps inadvertently. At any rate, the husband, John Bishop, was found not guilty of wounding his wife, Ann, who may have been drunk also, and there is no suspicion that anyone else was involved but the man and woman:

"Prisoner's Statement before the Magistrate. I took the knife away from her; she had it up to her own throat—I said to her "You are drunk;" she said "Am I?" and seized the knife; I seized it from her; she then ran out.

"The prisoner in his defence said that he accused her of being drunk; she snatched up the knife which was before her to throw at him, when he caught her elbow to prevent her, and the knife cut her neck.

      "NOT GUILTY."

Appleford was only "nearby" in the sense that he worked as house surgeon at the London Hospital where the woman was brought for treatment from the couple's home at 38 Macklin Street.

I see that Dr. Stephen Herbert Appleford was a J.P. and was an executor to the estate of Dr. Frederick Gordon Brown in 1928:

It is too early to inject common sense into the theory Chris.

A pdf file is available on the web showing handwriting samples of Dr. Appleford's against letter formations in Ripper letters, presumably part of Prof Eduardo Cuitino's work on the suspect:

Appleford is the Brother of Emily Appleford, wife of Dr Frederick Gordon Brown.

Not only was Appleford Browns Brother in law, he was also his partner.

Handwriting sample from 1911 census. Almost looks
too neat to be a doctor's.
