  • Joseph Sickert and John Netley relationship.

In one of Jonathan Menges podcasts Paul Begg mentions that John Netley may be the grandfather of Joseph Gorman aka Joseph Sickert (I think).

In response to this I fired up a paint program and put JN and JG's facial images next to each, side by side. The visual similarities seemed to suggest to me quite strongly that they were both blood related.

Paul mentioned reseach had been done to investigate this relationship. Not being privy this research I carried out the above process.

Anybody else want to try this out for themselves and comment on what they see?

      Hi Martyn.

About 10 or 12 years ago I carried out some research on Joseph Gorman Sickert and I recall that he was born in the area of Eton, Berkshire.

This was in the days before Ancestry.com since when such research has come on by leaps and bounds. So it may be possible to trace his grandparents by this method.

        Hi Martyn, very interesting.

According to this from FreeBMD, the father is William Gorman:

        Marriages Sept 1918

        Crook Alice M Pancras
        Gorman William Pancras

According to Chris Scot, these are Alice's parents:

        1881
        2 Rose Street, London
William Crook aged 50 born Eton - Pianoforte Finisher
        Wife:
Sarah A Crook aged 42 born Scotland

So Netley may be on the Gorman side. I couldn't find a Gorman/Netley marriage though.

John Netley seems to have always lived at home and never got married.

No involvement in the Ripper case but did make it to the final of Upper Class Twit of the Year.

The Complete Jack the Ripper A to Z by Paul Begg etc. says that Gorman's cousin was interviewed and said that Sickert was said to be the grandfather. (Google Books)

I see similarities, in the set of the mouth etc., but they're probably common English features.

I read there was speculation that the Gormans knew Netley. They probably remembered him because of his death.

Although you could try other spellings of the name in the Marriage Index: Netley, Notley, Nottley, Knottley.

There was the issue of no father on Alice's birth certificate. But William Crook is the father on her marriage certificate. And from what I gather, the grandparents were William Gorman and William Crook (Srs.).
