  • Computer Tip

Ordinarily, I'm the one asking for help..
This is a tip for those with desktop computers...
If you use your machine as often as I do and have as much data ( Over 3,000 gig...3Terrabytes... on two large external 'flash drives' and a storage unit as well as the main machine...which are almost always in operation ) as I do....you may want to spend a couple of dollars and purchase little fans to place at the front of the vents ( usually on the side and definitely the one at the back of the machine ) to remove the heat which builds up inside the computer.

I have had an external fan placed strategically at the back of my machine ( a fan which draws out more air, hence heat, than the internal exhaust fan generally emits ) for a few years now....but as with all things, age takes a toll on people as well as computers.

Having recently purchased a $9 mini fan ( it's small but it kicks major league ass.. ) and placed it in front of the vent situated at the side of this computer...the machine runs like brand new. I had recently experienced a week ( ambient heat in our home was 75 degrees ) in which either one of the browsers I used ( Opera, IE, Firefox, Google ) of perpetual problems which saw my machine malfunction at least four times a day....until I did the right thing and get that $9 fan.
I mention this because some of us may be experiencing problems with a slow computer....a computer which shuts down inexplicably....and other such issues.
Just in case anyone is interested.

P.S. If you do try something along these lines...make sure the fan draws the heat out...never blow air into an operating machine.

    Another heat related tip.
If you don't already every six months open up the machine and give it a hovering out.

In addition to what my man String sez...give it a good 2 cans of compressed air with the machine unplugged.

I hope this is the problem, Phil.
Computers, like cars, seem to be made better than they were say 10 years ago. I went through two computers with 300G and 500G respectively...the processors and fans went kaput.
I saved the hard drives from those machines and could use them again on this one...the big 1T machine.....but I'm not pushing it just yet.
          Good luck, Phil.

            Thanks for the tips How.
With the amount of hot air produced on some forums, it even affects my iPad.

My last machine which is still in operation, I run with a side off and a box fan facing inward cooling it. Cat hair is a problem though and I need to keep after that. It is 10 years old.

That's the Philly way of doing it.....I had a Compac back in 2002 in which one of the fans went and I did it that way for a while. I have the hard drive but not the actual machine anymore.
Fingers crossed that it stays up for you...

Hi Joan...I quite agree...they're most inconsiderate where they sleep too! How many of the little scoundrels do you run to at present?

                  All the best

Sorry for the second post. Custom Cooling Systems.

It is a secondary machine now running Ubantu for me. I can't function without some kind of unix shell. I'm a command line junky.

My new machine which is a year old now also collects cat hair through the vents.

I put one of those lunchbox reusable Freez Paks next to the fan vent on mine sometimes. Another is in the freezer while the other is in use, just in case.

How many hours do you get out of one of them?
