  • LDS Family Search Ruined???

I haven't used this for a while and now run up against needing an account. IF it is free I am not necessarily against getting an account. In fact I tried before and it's one of those things where no matter how much information you give, you just go around in circles and go nowhere.

I filed a hot complaint with them over a year ago but the account didn't seem necessary do I continued to use the site. Now I can't.

I started to fill in fields and the system admits I exist in their system but they insist I confirm my password. God knows what that was!

So I planned to file another less than complimentary comment but the fields won't advance so that I can actually enter the complaint!

I have a sneaking suspicion the whole site is just about a part of one of the expensive family search commercial outfits. Is that so? Will they start charging pretty soon? I see an option to stay logged in for two weeks. THAT sounds familiar...like give us your credit card number and we'll "GIVE" you two weeks but we'll nail your credit card thirteen days from now!!!!

There is a rumour the LDS church needs money. I have wondered if they were part of any of the big, costly genealogy sites. Don't know, just wondering. Maybe the formerly free site will start charging?

The site isn't working properly, Anna. I've had an account for years and used to transcribe records for them and still can't log in. They did affiliate themselves with Find my past a couple of years ago and that site has recently undergone a massive overhaul whereby I've had to pay £15 a month to access records I used to get for £9.99. I complained a couple of times but got nowhere. Those on the other end of the complaints... young, temporarily employed, on minimum wage and given a script don't seem to want to understand why I'm annoyed at paying an extra £5 to access exactly the same databases I used to have. I've spent hundreds of pounds over the years, regular custom seems to count for nothing.
    ...what can you do?!

Sorry to hear about these developments, ladies. These outfits ( not just the LDS or any one in particular ) seem to forget who kept these companies in business up to now. Hope the issues get sorted a.s.a.p.

      On another note....
They have positively and absolutely screwed up Genealogy Bank, so much so, that neither one of use here have used it in months by their implementation of some 'advanced' BETA nonsense. Impossible to know what's new like it used to be. Each month, the new additions to their site were made available...but now you can't see what's new. It was great to use for several years.....but man, what a pain in the ass now.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. You are such a good researcher!

I ran into something like this before and that is why I have an "account" on the LDS site but like I said the thing went around in circles and I had nothing in the end. Now they say I have an account but have to verify password, so yeah, it wounds like what you are saying, Debs, the site is a mess at the moment.

After my last experience, when I tried it at a later time it worked fine as a free, no account needed site.

I live in an area colloquially called the Moridore, a swath of the U.S. near Utah that is heavily inhabited by Mormons. I have known MANY, usually elderly, widowed Mormon ladies who went to Europe and all over to transcribe information from the original records.

I guess it was somewhere else here, after we had this discussion, that said the LDS site was back up an running. It looked like it was.

I decided to use it today and got the basic search form which I filled out. When I clicked search it demanded that I log in. So I am back to stuck with the account I can't access backed up with their "support" system that does nothing.

Some things I signed up for when I only had the tiny data capable phone, timed out or lost the signal before I finished signing up. I had no idea how things worked back then so there are a number of things that are half completed and connected to my email. This state of affairs prevents me from accessing some things. I suppose I could start over with a different email, name, etc. However the LDS sign up was an unholy mess to begin with as nothing seemed to register.

I tried it Anna and it made me sign in but luckily I remembered my login details of a few years back and it let me on. The search was just the same as it used to be...I also always liked Hugh Wallis website that showed the batches for different areas, all searchable....

We didn't used to have to sign in. I am half way signed in or not and cannot proceed. I had so much trouble with the sign up process that I emailed for help and never got a reply. I don't know why we have to sign in to anything when it has worked fine for years without a sign in feature. I think I would have to start over with a new email and name and if it is still as hard as it was I guess I won't get anywhere again.
