Just finished it. It's a rather slim volume at 184 pages and expensive. "Montague John Druitt - Homicidal Suicide" (by David Andersen) and "Francis Tumblety - The Man in the Slouch Hat" (by Mike Hawley) were the best chapters.

I was disappointed with Martin Fido's piece on Cohen. He could have included new information (that is now 5 - 6 years old), but instead he rehashed his Ripperologist piece of several years ago. Most of the chapter was spent defending Anderson's character, the arguments of which most of us have been familiar with for a long time.

Ditto with Steve Blomer's piece on Kosminski. There were some minor errors. I should have been picked to write the Kosminski chapter.

The second chapter in the book, written by someone calling himself Keith Stride, concerns the suspect candidacy of Joseph Barnett. If you’ve read Bruce Paley’s The Simple Truth, or Paul Harrions’ book (or more accessible, his essay in The Mammoth Book of Jack the Ripper) you’ll find there’s very little new in this chapter. Its all a pretty boiler plate Barnett-as-suspect 101.
What is interesting about this chapter though, is when the author isn’t going through the motions of Barnett suspect speculating but is filling in just the basic biographical material on Barnett, he copies, word for word, large portions of another author’s work. And, when ‘Stride’ brings up what he believes is a parallel case, that of Peter Sutcliffe, he does the same thing. So, ‘Mr. Stride’ is apparently so unsure of his chosen topic, even his suspect’s biography, that he directly copies and pastes from other writers without giving them acknowledgment or credit. These sources used by ‘Stride’ don’t even appear in the Bibliography provided in the back of the book. At least not in the digital copy I received. We’ll start with the section in his chapter concerning Peter Sutcliffe. It’s worth mentioning that the compiler of this book, Ricky Cobb, presents himself as an expert on the Yorkshire Ripper and has announced his own forthcoming book on that case. I wonder why he failed to take any interest in what ‘Keith Stride’ had to say about Sutcliffe, or more, even bother to do a quick internet search to see if the material ‘Keith Stride’ submitted for publication was even original?

When ‘Stride’ veers into discussing the Peter Sutcliffe case it includes the following:

Sutcliffe, feeling betrayed and utterly devastated, decided to confront her, but Sonia refused to answer any of his questions about the situation, or whether their relationship was over or not. They argued fiercely and Sutcliffe left her to lick his wounds. He felt angered and humiliated, his already sense of low self-esteem getting the better of him. It has been suggested that Sutcliffe was impotent.
That night, Sutcliffe decided to take his revenge by going with a prostitute. Perhaps it was way of trying to deal with his sexual issues. Driving up Manningham Lane, he went past the Royal Standard pub, and at a petrol station he saw a prostitute waiting for customers. Having confirmed she was "doing business", they agreed on a price of £5.

Coincidentally, Trevor Marriott in his book ‘The Evil Within’ contains the exact same sentences:

As many of you are aware Mark Ripper wrote an article in Ripperologist magazine 132 about the similarities between a chapter from Trevor Marriott’s book ‘The Evil Within’-concerning the serial killer William MacDonald- with the already published works of Paul B. Kidd, specifically from an essay by Kidd on the now defunct Crime Library website and in Kidd's book Never to be Released.

What’s puzzling is how ‘Keith Stride’ and Trevor Marriott can both use sentences identical to Canadian Yorkshire Ripper researcher Keith Brannen, who has been operating his website on the Yorkshire Ripper case for nearly 20 years.

That night, Sutcliffe decided to take his revenge by going with a prostitute. Driving up Manningham Lane, he went past the Royal Standard pub, and at a petrol station he saw a prostitute waiting for customers. Having confirmed she was "doing business", they agreed on a price of £5. "I thought I would have intercourse with the prostitute, but I changed my mind when it got to the stage where we had got to do it. We were on the way to her place and were talking and I realised what a coarse and vulgar person she was. We were practically there and I realised I didn't want anything to do with her. Before getting out of the car I was trying to wriggle out of the situation, but I felt stupid as well."

Unless it is revealed that Keith Brannen, who is supposedly living in Canada and has been singularly interested in the Yorkshire Ripper case for decades, is the person writing under the name Keith Stride, then it appears as though Keith Stride has copied Brannen’s website’s content without attribution. I suppose there is a possibility that Brannen copied from Trevor, but given what we know of other parts from ‘The Evil Within’, and the added fact that Brannen’s website had been operating since the year 2000, Trevor can explain the coincidence of his book and Brannen’s website containing matching content.

By the way, I did ask Trevor if he was Keith Stride even though I realized Trevor Marriott would write a Jospeh Barnett suspect chapter using a pseudonym a long time after hell freezes over.
Trevor denied ever having heard of Keith Stride, and I see no reason to doubt that.

As you say, How, direct plagiarism in this field is rather stupid. Unacknowledged use of others’ research or ideas, though, is not always so easy to spot.

I once read that in the field of cartography there is something called ‘map spoiling’: deliberate errors being included on maps to protect the copyright of original survey material.

We should keep an eye out for someone repeating the errors of earlier authors or researchers without acknowledging them.
