Actually he was responding to a question posed by a Times reviewer of Hallie’s book:

Was Fairfield outrageous, or was he honestly expressing a widely held sentiment?'

What a disappointment! It seems I only merit two paragraphs*. Here’s an extract from one of them:

When someone can provide me to a link in which Barnett spends even a fraction of the time giving insider Simon Wood stick for playing fast and loose with the facts as he does when it comes to Hallie Rubenhold I might start to believe it. And if someone can give me even a single example of Barnett drawing attention to the way Paul Begg played fast and loose with the facts of Monro's 1890 resignation as Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in his (and Keith Skinner's) 'Scotland Yard Files' book I'll show you a pig flying down Whitechapel High Street.’

I haven’t read the ‘Scotland Yard Files’ book and off the top of my head I couldn’t tell you who Monro was.

But I have read The Bank Holiday Murders and Ripper Confidential, both of which I have been critical of. But perhaps David is unaware of that?

I thought it was something like that.

It seems that if I haven’t critiqued a book I haven’t read about a subject of which I am largely ignorant, my claim that ‘insiders’ get stick is invalid.
