Since it's been mentioned that someone over on Casebook believed that Chapman was the last victim then that would be another example of a person who'd vote for "Another". I hadn't thought of that one.
Apparently no one thinks that Jack was responsible for any of the Torso Murders. -St.Looey Stan
Despite the field in general relying less on suspect-based works to attract people and the sizeable and astute younger cadre on The Forums seemingly more focused on aspects and a variety of other realms of thought & speculation....I'd wager that in the future more attempts will be undertaken to link those Thames murders to the WM. Its already been bandied about amongst us and who knows ...maybe a documentary down the line.
Then again Stan...a lot of Ripperologists are reluctant to commit to a set of victims even in the WM and for the most part, for good reason.
Different sort of murders, yet....who knows brudda ?
Ironically enough, I think that if the Torso murders had taken place at a time seperate to the JTR murders, they would have gained more attention and possibly been linked to him more often. We know that killers can and do change their MO but it's less common for them to kill one victim via throat slashing, then dismember them the next, then go back to throat slashing, and so on.....in that sense, and from police beliefs in 1888, I think it's unlikely that the 2 series are linked.
However, it would be interesting if the victims could have been identified....it would atleast provide further study material. Another problem with it is that there is so little to work with, a lot less than even the JTR murders.
To some degree, the Torso Murders are overshadowed by JtR but they, conversely, get attention because of their association with the more famous case so I don't know where the final balance is.
The Torso case would probably be more well known if the killer had written some letters with a catchy signature. It also matters that there is nothing really known about most of the victims.
I think it's because Chapman can't really count as a "last" victim since many more murders with similar circumstances occured afterwards. All of the candidates listed here are the ones that are possibly Jack's final victim. With Chapman, we still hav Stride (not definite, but possible), Eddowes (very, very similar to Chapman) and Kelly (again not definite, but a very high probability)
