    Hey Alan,

Yep, James was at Seething Lane station, and George at Bishopsgate.

If the 91 census stands for 88, then I suspect it was George at Mitre Square, as Bishopsgate was closer.

    Cheers
    Monty

      Also

....it seems George became a Postmaster prior to his death.

Yes indeed Monty and at his funeral, as a mark of respect, the coffin was delivered to the wrong cemetery.

          Izzard family

          Hello,
I have to be honest and say I would never have spotted the connection between the marriage certificate of James Alfred Izzard and the England Census record of 1881 for George Izzard. I am of the opinion that this proves there was a family connection between these 2 men. In none of the other census records, do you see George taking in any type of lodger...only family members.
Unfortunately and I did check.....there are no personal records surviving for these 2 officers which is a pity, as I am sure they would have been very interesting.
George Izzard must have been a very likeable and social person because he is the licensee for the George & Dragon, in the High Street of Codicate, in 1891, after retiring from the police. Then later, as already has been said, becomes the sub-postmaster and employs 3 other family member help him with the post office.

          thanks again,
          Alan.

            Thank you too Alan,

            For the info, great stuff.

I agree, the Welwyn connection, along with the unusual name, points to a family connection between George and James.

Talk about the lunatics taking over the asylum, Bull was a Doctor at St Georges, the same time as Dr William "blackened face and spectacles" Holt.

                  I thought it was, Robert?
Chris could only find one who fitted the circumstances, William C Bull from Bromborough, later a surgeon and lecturer at St Georges Hospital.

                    Hi Jon

No, Chris tried to make the medical student claim work, and found someone who fitted the bill. But that was just to see if someone fitting that criterion could be found. It was only a provisional identification. He then found the real Bull, which you can see him doing further down the thread.

I'm a little confused about this issue... besides, I've read a dozen times a chapter of the book "Jack and Olw Jewry" called "The problem with the Izzards" that confuses me even more.

We have three Izzards here; could someone clarify for me who is (or who is believed to be) each one?

                        1- Inspector Izzard
Inspector Izzard, who ordered Sergeants Amos Dudman and William Phelps to keep the public away from the square.

                        2- Station Sergeant Izzard
"In the meantime I [Inspector James McWilliam] had been informed of the murder and arrived at the Detective Office at 3.45 a.m., after ascertaining from S.S. Izzard what steps he had taken in consequence of it”

                        3- Inspector George Izzard
Inspector George Izzard of the William Bull case.

If the first and third are the same person, who is the sergeant?
