An idea I was having, pertaining to the dozen boxes with Russian letters and documents pertaining to the Okhrana activity in Europe from the late 1880s - early 1900s available at Stanford Uni. in Palo Alto, for which Lynn Cates is trying to find/hire someone (fluent in Russian) willing to go research this.
What if we asked Stepan Poberowski (of Rip 50 fame)? Is he still “active“? I hear he has worked as a television cameraman, a script writer, a researcher, and an historical adviser to broadcasting companies, and that at present he runs an Internet and computer video editing business. If too busy to do it himself, he might know of someone (perhaps young and not too “expensive“) capable and willing to research this? Poor Lynn Cates paid 130- British Pounds to a Stanford student who pocketed the money and did zilch.
    Best regards,
    Maria

Was the Russian connection real or is it a souped up conspiracy-type theory contrived by Le Queux? I suppose it does not hurt to delve further into it but my feeling is that it was probably more made up than actual.

My sentiments exactly at this point, but it's being researched, and I'm following closely on any results that might turn up. The only tangible evidence turned up so far is that the Pi√≤tr Rachkovsky London bureau (active from late summer 1888 on) instrumentalized the Ripper murders to plant a fictitious “Vassiliev the anarchist French Ripper“ campaign in the London press (as discussed in the thread Whiggishness and the anti-Anderson lobby, posts #1178-1204 (http://www.jtrforums.com/showthread.php?t=12060).
By the by, if anyone has a contact to Stepan Poberowski (of Rip 50 fame) or to a Russian speaking researcher, this would help IMMENSELY in clearing this up (by researching the boxes with Russian letters and documents pertaining to the Okhrana activity in Europe from the late 1880s - early 1900s available at Stanford Uni.).

Le Queux advertized the Pedachenko-Rasputin connection, which is clearly a myth, and a mixup with Ostrog (who was a mixup with someone else, but I digress).
        Best regards,
        Maria

          The main culprit...

The main culprit for propagating and developing the Russian conspiracy theories over the years was Donald McCormick. The best reading/source for 'Russian conspiracists' are his two books, The Identity of Jack the Ripper, 1959 and 1970 (revised).

About the Mc Cormick book (pushing “Dr. Pedachenko“ as a suspect) I've heard that it's reportedly one of the possibly worst publications in Ripperology (Karen Trenouth nonwithstanding), containing almost entirely fabricated/altered information. I've no idea if the 1970 revised edition corrected any of this.

              Maria:

Some fellow named Evans wrote a book ( Scotland Yard Investigates) which has a chapter full of references to things McCormick is responsible for.
We did a show on myths in the Case ( Sour Grapes episode) on Rippercast over 3 years ago.
Listen to it...I believe I was the one bringing up some of the McCormick related issues.

Thank you so much for the info, How. I'll look up that rippercast - is it on casebook? I own SY investigates and JTR-Letters from Hell and need to read them cover to cover in tandem, hopefully in early June.
                Best regards,

Those were good times,lady...I had my own dressing room back then...and Mike and Robert had to dress in the alleyway next to the dumpster and methadone clinic.

Thank you so much for the info, How. I'll listen to it VERY late tonight (when I'm done with some work).

LOL. I love the idea of a dressing room for a podcast. I guess Robert is Linford, but who's Mike?
                    Best regards,

                      Maria:

Robert is Robert J. McLaughlin and Mike is, of course, Covell.
Linford is just another old man.

                        Oh OK, thanx.
(And I'm sure Linford will appreciate your comment.) ;-)

                          Bump up.

This is the greasy Yevno Azef, a Jewish agent of the Okhrana, responsible for the deaths of prominent figures within the socialist movement in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. His death due to renal failure couldn't come too quickly for some.

                          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevno_Azef

Although only 19 in 1888....he was a very active agent of the Okhrana...the anti-Semitic & anti-socialist Tzarist police shown here in St. Petersburg at the time of the Bloody Sunday ( January 9, 1905 by the old Russian calendar) Massacre :

Make you wonder whether any other Jewish doubleagents were involved with the Berner Street gang. He'd fit right in with them ethnically and linguistically. One can always fake the ideology.

I mentioned this because that old idea of someone desiring to discredit the efforts of the IWMEC or other predominantly-Jewish socialist groups in London came to me this morning, when I realized what day it was ( January 9th ). While probably far-fetched to some, it wasn't to Sir Charles Warren at the time and he said as much.

                            Okhrana

                            Hello Howard.

"Make you wonder whether any other Jewish doubleagents were involved with the Berner Street gang."

Try Cyprien Jagolkovsky. He is the one who, in summer 1888, alerted Rachkovski about the Jewish Socialist presence in East London, precipitating Rachkovski's coming to London for the rest of that year.

                            Cheers.
