Stewart Evans was also generous in sharing a copy of a Herald London edition front page which is different than a US edition in appearance.

To illustrate the difference between the UK and US editions of the NYHerald, take a look at Stewart's UK copy in a previous post....and then this one from the same day.

What is a little surprising is that UK papers, more often than not, had their current news..important items...in the 'center page' ( pages 2-5 or 3-5), while American papers had the top stories on the front page. We see the opposite in this instance.

Presumably the people on the inside of the Dorset St passage were the Court inhabitants who'd been kept in by police.

The sketch is from September 1889, Robert. Presumably they are the inhabitants from that time unless it was based on an earlier sketch or photograph.

Ah yes, silly me. The guy on the left threw me - looks like a policeman.

                  Thanks for posting these.

The first drawing of Mitre Square that Rob posted. Was there actually a lamp there on the wall at the corner? I don't remember one being in that location in 1888. Or was it sketched in 1889 and a lamp was added?

The lamp was added after. Not sure of the date but between October 88 and September 89

Was that because of the murder?

I presume so. It would seem likely but without seeing any Board of Works reports it's just an educated guess.

Also it MAY have been Dr Sedgwick Saunders who was responsible for the new lamp as I think it fell down to him as he was on the Sewers Commission.

Some of these drawings look like they've been made from photographs.
                            Thanks for your time,
