  • The Night of The Double Event.

    Hello all.

This is a question, open to discussion, regarding the two Jewish men's clubs on the night of the double event. The Imperial Club and the IWMC. I don't have the answer, but I am curious to views on the possibilities this question might raise.

The question is- Are any of you aware of anyone known to have affiliation to both clubs?

There was a discussion on casebook years ago about the Imperial Club. I think it was established it was a working men's club similar to the IWMC. I believe they held theatrical plays on occasion which made me wonder if Schwartz may have been an actor in a play that night at the Imperial Club? More important to me, though, is whether or not someone may have traveled between the two clubs on that night? Mainly from Berner Street to Mitre Square?

I don't know if there's any significance in the names but, if there is, then people comfortable with imperialism are unlikely to be anarchist/socialist, and vice versa.

The Imperial Club seems to have been rather more upmarket compared to the Berner Street club, and its members were businessmen rather than, say, market traders hawking cheap jewellery from a pony and cart. This advertisement was found by Chris Scott in the Jewish Chronicle of 18 March 1887:

    16 and 17, Duke-Street, Aldgate

The above club is now open for the reception of members to meet - a want which has long been felt by gentlemen engaged in business in the immediate neighbourhood. It is fitted up with every modern requisite, no expense having been spared by the Management... and is conducted on the usual principles of the best West End Clubs; the cuisine being strictly kosher.

Annual Subscription, 10s 6d. Applications for membership should be made at the Club premises to JOHN HYMAN, Manager."
    Kind regards, Sam Flynn

I've always thought the two clubs were the antithesis of each other.

The Imperial catering to religiously observant Jewish clientele, the IWES reviling religion.

The Imperial catering to business owners or would be business owners as opposed the the IMES's socialist principals.

I vaguely remember people finding a connection to the Kosminski's and the club years ago via the secretary of the club.

        then, again

Hello Gareth. Of course, the Imperial Club may have had certain facial hair requirements. (Sorry couldn't resist.)
