    It's sad that wild creatures should be killed in order to create quite grotesque looking freaks. There's nothing cute or pretty about that object at all, and I can't imagine that anyone would be fooled by it.

    The Feejee Mermaid



    Though P.T. Barnum made the Feejee Mermaid famous, they were originally created by Japanese East Indies fishermen circa 1810. It was a traditional art form in which they created faux mermaids by stitching the upper bodies of apes to the bodies of fish. P.T. Barnum began exhibiting it in 1842, after a few other showmens’ exhibits failed.
