Back in the early 90's we were hikking out on the North York Moors between Goathland and Grosemont. We were high on the moors and it was a really hot day and we came across a spring. We took off our sock and shoes and sat in the water and against our protests one of the group filled his water bottle. Just a short while later a large orange mass, of what looked like jelly, passed us in the flow of the water. To this day we do not know what it was, but suggestions ranged from farmland waste, jelly, and a by product of agricultural fertiliser.

I just checked on an orange goo mystery from Dodderidge County which turned out to be "Fracking fluid" ie a spill of the type of chemicals pumped into the ground during gas drilling operations

Mike, this only happened after you put your feet in the water, yes?
