It is indeed perplexing, How, given that the article from the Birmingham Daily Post of January 11, 1889 and others of the period describe these events as a 'phenomenon' of extraordinary character - real, solid historical evidence... let alone the statistical evidence that Colin has compiled, that this belief is still promoted. But, alas, we can't let the facts get in the way of a good theory based on a predetermined agenda.

I like this quote from said article as it can certainly be applied today in regards to punishment..."The sacredness of human life has grown into a superstition; life is preserved at any price, even at the price of life; and yet, there rages through the country an epidemic of murderous outrage to which even the oldest Englishman can recollect no parallel."

Two months to the day after George Hutchinson appeared on the scene, the Pall Mall Gazette wrote about the American George Hutchinson but with a twist in that here was an example of a British newspaper carrying the original byline from a non-British source.

From Mid America to North Africa...the sightings of Jack The Ripper outside of Britain began to appear as in this excerpt...again an instance of a British periodical using a non-British source in the byline.

              Dear Cris :

Thanks very much for your observations. I overlooked them until now.

I especially appreciate this line from the Brummy paper :

"....there rages through the country an epidemic of murderous outrage to which even the oldest Englishman can recollect no parallel."

                The Murder Epidemic

Here's one from Mabel Collins' home island of Guernsey.

Again, we find peer criticism within the remarks of this tabloid. Expecting competing newspapers to be the first to take the first step in toning down their content was a little naive,I think.

Back to the Tunis report and we see additional information regarding the belief within the police department(s) that the murderer was still at large in the district.

"The Ripper" begins to show up on the Continent in various places such as in this early 1889 Spanish outrage.

An American "Ripper-like" murder occurred in Camden ( about 8-10 miles from yours truly ) New Jersey and a letter sent to the Mayor of Newcastle before the month was through.

                                February 1889

Once again we find the mention of Case details being considered as a cause for the behavior of one of many perpetrators assumedto be imitiating the Whitechapel Murderer.
