Very interesting stuff, Howard. Amazing how the years pass!

Fascinating as ever to see how the name of "Jack the Ripper" remained newsworthy and popped up in so many different contexts. The Ripper was indeed a cultural phenomenon.

          I agree,old bean.
I don't recall a single month going by ( 1889 & 1890 ) where the name didn't appear at least once in the press ( Most of the time in numerous instances and as you mention, different contexts)...again, only using one word as a search term.
That's not counting American papers, Canadian, or Australian papers which I intentionally left off the two In The News threads. They're for later:cool:

                  Reported Suicide Of The Fiend

The "London correspondent" was affiliated with the Nottingham Guardian. The Pall Mall Gazette contains the same article as follows, but with the newspaper that this correspondent worked for.

                    Stage Detectives

Ironic that this Dubliner paper would mention the Ripper still being at large the day after a few papers mentioned his demise and one day before Frances Coles was murdered.

                        Frances Coles

On the same day she was victimized, Frances Coles appeared in the following out of town tabloid.

                        More to come later....

After February 13th, most of the Ripper related articles naturally focused on the Coles murder & Thomas Sadler.

However, some other miscreants made the news as well.

Barnett, Larkins, and The PMG whining, as usual, about the police

The individual mentioned in the excerpt featuring Montagu Williams was Edward K. Larkins, the proponent of the Portugese cattleboatmen as Ripper theory....and also the person who was responsible for alerting a constable in A division in November of 1889 to Antoni Pricha, thinking Pricha resembled Astrakhan Man.
