What better way to start off a new year than with an article featuring Albert Bachert !

There is a very good article in an issue of Ripper Notes which discusses Henry Dowd.

My how fast the years pass, How! Just a quick note to say that I believe we are talking about Richmond, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, here, and not Richmond in Surrey. The town has a magnificent castle with a square Norman keep overlooking the River Swale (the town is situated in Yorkshire's beautiful "dales" area). In terms of the paper mill that is mentioned, of course at this date, paper mills made linen paper the old traditional way, and used "rags" to manufacture paper before wood pulp began to be used, and thus the mention of women being employed as rag pickers. I did some research some years ago as background for an unpublished novel that I wrote in which the murdered man (it was based on the Maybrick case [!]), was a paper manufacturer.
