Speaking of eels....

This is an 1882 sketch from Harper's Weekly depicting 'The Eel Market' on Catherine Slip within spitting distance from the East River Hotel...where a certain other Brown was murdered 9 years later



The eel market on Catherine Slip was influential in American dance history. Blacks would dance for free eels and to entertain the locals on the Lower East Side.

This painting is valued at $ 8,000 and depicts black fellows dancing for those slimy inedible critters
