  • Don't even bring up the major mask protests in Boise, Idaho. Another extremely nasty politicization of The Virus.

This sort of thing is how the battle is lost in USA. I have followed news from other countries, mostly UK, since this thing began, and have followed the best suggestions. We never got very organized as a country. It's not only major leaders but also those in the public health field who were "not transparent"--meaning they LIED--for various reasons. For instance, Dr. Fauci discouraged masks for fear there would not be enough for medical workers. Understandable, but his words cannot be un-said.

I am amazed how many "public health" intrusions have been allowed into our lives without a squawk and now, when it is life and death, there is revolt?

          • I'm now up to at least 4 co-workers who have come down with Covid.

All four, thankfully, are in good shape. Same sort of complaints...headache, occasional nausea, temperature around 101, and fatigue.

            • I'm not sure if I am smart enough to use this new system. I hope I am in the right place.

It looks like the drug Ivermectin, an anti-parasitical drug, is prophylactic against SARSCoV-2/COVID. (I am familiar with this drug as it is widely used in veterinary medicine and available in feed stores. NEVER give it to cats as it is extremely toxic to felines.)

I have a lot of questions about this virus. My doctors say my household and I had it a year ago, based upon 8 of nine people having weird symptoms like complete loss of smell and taste. Our illnesses started with a young boy who came back from the Umatilla school district in northeast Oregon. Schools in that district were closed for fumigation over Thanksgiving 2019 due to a 'weird respiratory infection' that had caused 61% absenteeism. A woman claiming to be a nurse in that area had posted on FB that this was a really tough virus and people were dying from it. That post is no longer available.

However all that sorts out, I think it is reasonable to say some of the exceptionally horrific and peculiar things now seen in COVID patients, must not have been happening during this outbreak which I believe is connected to cases in Washington state. (Umatilla County is on Washington/Oregon border.)

How often, how fast and how much does SARSCoV-2 mutate? Was a mild strain of the virus going through our area in 2019?

Around this time, Italy was noting deaths from 'weird pneumonia', November/December 2019. Even so, I have not seen reports of the most peculiar symptoms of COVID such as blood clotting, blood poisoning, etc. I think these cases, based upon exhumations, worked out to be COVID.

I am further surprised that my best friend and I were not life threateningly ill last year. We both have issues which put us in the drop-dead category. Based upon past experience, I am particularly at risk. Though some of us had lingering symptoms in 2020, I could say all of us had a mild illness and recovered, compared to the horrors we now see. (I left a comment somewhere about increased, extremely severe migraine and a goodhearted, well meaning person replied that I was lucky not to have such terrible sequelae as others have. I accepted the reply in the spirit intended but see the truth of it when I see reports of amputations due to blood clots following COVID. And worse.)

But we have all been severely ill every year in the spring, 2017, 18, 19. THOSE 'weird', 'tough viruses' had many signs and symptoms of COVID. I am extremely curious if we have all had some sort of novel corona virus in the recent past. While doctors were busy ignoring patients and researchers failed to give a damn, might SARSCoV strains have been active? (Believe it or not, the underpopulated, somewhat isolated border region here has international connections through a university and Native owned casino.)

Then we have reports of SARSCoV-2 entering mink in Denmark. Evolutionary genetic research on the virus shows it has jumped in and out of various animal populations and humans a few times in the past. Does it have a pattern of weakening and strengthening? Do severe reactions have to do with antigens or something from recent animal infections?

I truly hope the vaccines, as well as past infections, confirm long term immunity. Or will the virus keep mutating like the flu? It is said corona viruses mutate slower.

                  • For anyone who uses Walgreen's Pharmacy in the States :

Walgreens is following the CDC’s phased distribution schedule to administer the COVID-19 vaccination.
                    Phase 1a
                    • Healthcare workers
                    • Residents of long-term care facilities
                    • Select populations based on varied state guidelines*
                    Phase 1b
                    • Persons age 75+
                    • Essential frontline workers (identified by the CDC)
                    Phase 1c
                    • Persons ages 65-74
                    • Persons ages 16-64 with chronic health conditions
                    • Other essential workers
                    Phase 2
                    • General population

We anticipate vaccines be available for the general population at our stores in Spring 2021.

If you fall into one of these groups, we recommend contacting your public health department for more information. Check back frequently for updates.

                    • Meanwhile in the UK we are seeing a big post-Christmas spike in infections and deaths. According to a survey, 44% of adults "formed a bubble" - that is, put themselves in a position to infect or be infected by people from another household. In the week to 2 January, new cases in the UK rose by 36% compared with the previous week.

No doubt that is mainly owing to Christmas, not the new variant. The increase was much less in London and Kent (in Kent new cases had actually fallen the previous week).

Above all I pity the NHS staff who have to try to cope with the consequences of such stupidity, while putting their own lives in danger.

                      • Hear, hear, Mr. Phillips. There was no reason for so many people to travel ( in the US) this year at Thanksgiving, when the numbers spiked sharply afterwards here.

Just a note to say that going by the death toll statistics here, the equivalent of the entire city of Anaheim ( in California) has died from Covid....over 350, 000 people.

                        • I know a lot of people don't find it easy to do without face-to-face social contact, even to save lives, but I think in the current situation in the South-East of England they should make a greater effort.

When I went for a walk today I saw people queueing indoors to buy a take-away coffee. With health services in London reportedly two weeks away from capacity, I don't even know why take-aways are still open.

                          • Chris:

There is still take out service in my area. Fortunately, the proprietor's insistence on employees wearing masks is being observed. We take out from only one restaurant ( No indoor dining, however) and the people who work there have been hip to the urgency.
I honestly can't say I've seen anyone not wearing a mask since early December around here...although we have to occasionally strongarm our mechanic at work to comply....and I don't see that many groups of people exceeding 4 and even then, they appear to assume the six foot distancing. Even at the bustling Wawa convenience store that I go to every morning at 5 AM, people are observant.

                            • Friends and I decided to get pizza last night. Our restaurants in my small town are usually fairly empty. The pizza place was packed with a wedding party and children. (My friend said Mormon since they brought their kids to the wedding dinner.) I suggested we get a pizza and eat at home, which we did.

Not so long ago my husband and I entered a pizza restaurant which was packed with kids having birthday parties. We got one of those "mystery viruses" which put us both in the hospital and took months to recover. I have absolute terror of packed restaurants!

Even though doctors say I have had COVID, most of the people in my bank have been out with strep. Is there a new, extremely virulent form of strep going around? Seems like we hear more and more about strep right now. I didn't want to get that in the pizza place, either.

                              • There was a piece on this evenings news about a protest by Covid deniers. Needless to say they were not masked but their faces were obscured. Why the TV channel did so I find hard to understand. They should put their pics up everywhere so that people know who they are and avoid them.
