  • Element 2- International Criticism of The Police

Not only did quite a few newspapers in Britain criticize the way the Met handled the investigation, but American newspapers ( New York and Philadelphia papers leading the way ) took shot after shot against the performance of the police. Even police officials, on occasion, offered their disdain as to what the Met police and hierarchy had done to apprehend the Ripper.

This is another element of the Whitechapel Murder story that is unique.

I would post that Antipodeal, Canadian, and Continental newspapers also ,on one or more occasion, took shots at the Met.....but cannot remember which editions did at this point in time. I'll have to get to that.

    Hi Howard

I don't think the contemporary criticism of the Met is too surprising, given that even today we students of the case marvel at how the killer was able to get away scot free time and time again leaving few if any clues to his (or her) identity.

    Cheers

      Understood....

My point being that this was the first time ( unless someone can show otherwise) the press in one nation(s) lambasted the police department of another in regard to crimes which did not materially affect them.

These 'elements ' that I've mentioned are, from what I have gathered, the first time that they ever occurred ( cops in drag, international insults).
