You could put all the people in the world nicknamed the Boston Strangler, Cleveland Torso Killer, Yorkshire Ripper, or Jerry Brudos....in a thimble.

Baseball players (Jimmy 'Ripper' Collins, Jack 'The Ripper' Clark,) Football players (Jack 'The Ripper' Roberts) , Wrestlers (Roy 'Ripper' Collins )..;. etc.....

I think we need to be careful when we attribute the name "Ripper" to the Ripper case when it is applied to a sports figure. As you know, in Australia "Ripper" is used to describe something outstanding. Also in the UK there is the designation "ripping yarns" and that something is a "rip snorter." Additionally, we know just from the name "High Rip Gang" that "rip" was used before 1888 to denote the action or ferocity of the gang.

I don't think I've mentioned this before but, when I played rugby, I was actually nicknamed Jack the Ripper because I was adept at "ripping the ball" from the opposition. My hero was the great Swansea and Wales lock-forward, Geoff Wheel, who was renowned for his "ripping" skills.

That's a good example. Thanks, Sam. I just came across this graphic of "Ripper" Williams.
