                • Thank you Howard. I see you've travelled forward in time and posted newsletter 183 from June 25th!

I'm waiting for #177, if you have some spare time at some point. I was trying to find more info on Ovide Robillard, but not having much luck. He seems to have been very influential later on in music copyright law and introducing copyright in the US. Still, I didn't manage to find a photo of the guy.

                  • Happy Memorial Day, Katt !

As much as I'd like to be the master of time and space and capable of schlepping into the century of my choice....the reason the Echos are dated in advance is that at one point I wanted to have them appear on those dates but scrapped the idea a while back.

A photo of Robillard has been tough to locate, that's for sure. One of the better articles on Robillard was published in Montreal. I've attached Number 177

To be able to post Number 178 and 179 is going to require my breaking those two down even further into smaller PDFs.

Good luck if you continue to search for Robillard's photo.

                    • Thank you. Robillard seems like an interesting guy. He's mentioned in a few academic works about music history because he seems later, around 1910-20, to have specialised in music copyright law and represented the composers' organisation. Apparently he started demanding 5$ in copyright fee for his clients when their works were performed on stage, which in the beginning was the subject of scorn and ridicule - performers stating they'd simply perform other songs - but eventually led the way to general acceptance of composers' compensation for performance of their works.

I haven't found his photo online yet, though.

                      • Thanks, Katt.
It would be nice to have at least one photograph of him or even a sketch considering he's a prominent player in the period of time following the verdict and imprisonment of Ali, certainly more so than House, Levy, & Friend, who more or less washed their hands of Ali if one goes by the amount of articles in which the attorneys and Ali's names are featured.
                        I'm looking too, Kattrup....
It took 120 years for someone to locate a photo of Damon...Robillard's time is due.

                        • Katt:

Here's another Echo that covers the three pardon attempts leading up to the fourth and final effort in 1901-1902
It contains photos of some of the prominent men ( one supporter surprised me considering where he lived and his platform on certain social issues)
who made up the list of heavy hitters in Ali's corner.

Most of the support, IMHO, was based on international diplomacy rather on their interest in Ali as a person or in his case, a convict.

I agree with Prof. Dekle that Ali's release hinged on two things : Something tangible, rather than speculation about 'planted blood' or the police 'settling' for Ali....which
was the key...and the continued effort of the French Consulate, who had been unable to secure a pardon without the key...or anything tangible, which is why Governors Black, Flower, and Roosevelt dismissed the pardon attempts before Odell signed the commutation. Of course, Gov. Black took Ali's violent assault on a young man in
prison into account in the 2nd campaign in rejecting the application.
