Yesterday, I listened to Luke Jerod Kummer discussing his visit to Albany and what he found inside one of the four boxes of the Governor's ( Odell) effects related to the Brown murder.

A letter was sent by the Governor of New Jersey to Gov. Ben Odell from this fellow....Foster McGowan Voorhees.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foster_McGowan_Voorhees

Voorhees vouched for Damon. The two were friends. Voorhees represented Union County ( Cranford is one town in Union County) in the NJ Senate before becoming Governor (1899-1902), back in the 1880's..

Things are now a little clearer.

What better person to vouch for you than the Governor of the state you live in, especially when you've withheld evidence in a criminal case ?. It's now no wonder why he didn't receive public condemnation in his day. Damon, at least to those in Ali's corner, must have been seen as a hero or savior for coming forward. To some of us, he was anything but.

Even though the revelation of the key does not necessarily mean Ali was proven innocent or that the Farmhand was proven guilty...it does prove one thing :

    It's Who You Know.

      It's also what you overlook....

On page 216 of The East River Ripper, George Dekle mentions Voorhees' letter to Gov. Odell in support of George Damon.
