  • Polly’s Dad a Smoke-jack maker?

Edward Walker described himself as a ‘smith and engineer’ on the 1861 census while he and his family were living in Harp Alley.

There had been a Walker family living in Harp Alley from 1790-1845 - in business as smiths, lock-makers, smoke-jack manufacturers...etc

Just a coincidence I thought, until I saw that James Walker, the smoke-jack maker, had not only lived and worked in Harp Alley, but he had also subsequently lived in Stamford Street, Blackfriars Road, where Polly and William Nichols lived in a Peabody Block.

The dates are a couple of decades adrift, but the correspondence of the name, occupation and two addresses - one in the City and one across the river - is intriguing.

Where did Catherine Eddowes go when she returned from hopping to claim a reward for Jack the Ripper?

    The Shoe Lane Casual Ward.

Here’s a clue: it wasn’t on Shoe Lane.

What significance do you think the Casual Ward has for Polly?

More circumstantial evidence that they knew each other over a long period of time.

1867/8 in London Hospital with Rheumatic fever.

Almost certainly meeting up with Eddowes again in Thrawl Street, moving next door to her just before Kate went hopping.

Kate returns for a reward,Shoe Lane being her first stop over.

Nichols was murdered close to the London Hospital.

Eddowes murder shows surgical expertise and knowledge of the maxillary sinuses,a major first infection point of strep pyogenes.

Do you have evidence of their being treated at the London Hospital?

Polly may have moved away from the area before the Casual Ward was opened.
