Israel Schwartz - new information

At the Hanbury St School, apparently on 15th June 1896, was admitted Lewis Schwartz/Swartz, father Israel of 13 Queen St. Lewis has DOB 6th Dec 1890. No last school attended. Left 24th April 1896, i.e. before he joined.

I think what may have happened is that the joining column is 1895 with a series of dittoes. Further up someone has overwritten the dittoes with the 1896 date, but I take it that Lewis joined on 7th May 1895.

Robert, you probably got this but there's also Esther b c 1884, presumably Dinah E from the 1891 census? She was admitted to the JFS in Nov 1894, birthdate Sept. 1884, father Israel Schwartz. Transfered from Hanbury St. Address 12 Queen St . Left July 1898

The GRO has a 1Q1892 birth for a Louis Schwartz in STGITE - mother's maiden name Mihlgoran.

Ancestry has him as the son of Joseph and Mary (Milgram).

It is possible the Schwartz family used some old form of calendar and that caused confusion in dates. There is a Hebrew calendar and Slavic countries were notorious for using the "old calendar", Gregorian I think. If Schwartz reckoned dates by an Old Church Slavonic system I think it would imply he was born in a section of Poland that had a strong Orthodox Christian representation.

I have a question I will probably mangle. A Schwartz child was registered for school at the Berner Street School? Did parents choose the school where their kids went or were they assigned by living address?

Yes Gary, and I think Israel registered at least one birth a bit late. But the surname doesn't chime with a couple of others on there, where the mother is Rabinovich or Rosinovich or Razdenovich or something like that, so I'm not too sure about Mihlgoran.

I don't know the answer to that, but in a world of transient lodgings I doubt if children were uprooted from school all the time or if authorities could keep tabs on these people. The school records only show one address, whereas some parents would move at least once during their child's time at the school.

I've done a wee bit of research, and the name is of Ashkenazi Jewish origin, deriving from the Yiddish for "pomegranate" (Milgroym). A search on Yad Vashem finds 1,056 matches for Milgrams - and its variants - from Poland, which dwarfs the number of hits for Milgrams from Russia (125), Germany (63), Austria (7), Czechoslovakia and Hungary (3 apiece).

Most of the Polish Milgrams come from the obvious places (Łódź, Warsaw), but - spookily, perhaps - there are proportionately a large number of Milgrams (24) listed from the small town of Lipsko.
