From what I understand, a man in the 19th century would declare himself a "Gentleman" on a wedding certificate to state that he had the means to support a wife without needing to hold down a job.
I assume Henry was living on a policeman's salary, so it does seem odd that he would declare himself a "Gentleman" on a legal document.
