I recently found Henry Coxs wedding certificate (attached) and wondered why he would call himself a Gentleman as opposed to a uniformed police man as he was then ? It was a legal document so I find it strange, any ideas?

From what I understand, a man in the 19th century would declare himself a "Gentleman" on a wedding certificate to state that he had the means to support a wife without needing to hold down a job.

I assume Henry was living on a policeman's salary, so it does seem odd that he would declare himself a "Gentleman" on a legal document.

Maybe the father-in-law, Charles Vidler, had a problem with cops. Henry had to say he was independently wealthy to marry Martha.
