Interesting and it flies in the face of those who think there was an establishment cover up to protect Etonians and clubable toffs from public censure.

Sorry to open an old thread. I had always thought this was in reference to Lord Somerset, Charles Hammond and others fleeing arrest in their involvement in the Cleveland Street Scandal. It appears there was another scandal in 1889? This time involving important men and 10 young girl victims.

          A LONDON CLUB SCANDAL.
THE AFFAIR SUPPRESSED. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
          London, November 9.

A horrible scandal in connection with a private West End Club is reported. Ninety-eight members in all are implicated. Thirty-one warrants have been issued, but will not be executed on the understanding that the persons connected with it leave the United Kingdom. The list of offenders includes future dukes, the sons of dukes, peers, Hebrew financiers, many honorable persons, and several officers of the Imperial Army. All the latter have suddenly resigned their commissions. The offenders have fled. The newspapers have suppressed reference to the scandal, but there is no doubt of its having taken place.
