              Hi Jerry,

              This article suggests that Abberline was with the Pinkerton agency at the time.

              So in 1898 he was back from Monte Carlo.

              A reprint of "Three successive seasons or twelve months behind the scenes at Monte Carlo - extracted from the Reminiscences of Ex. Detective Chief Inspector F.G. Abberline C.I.D. Scotland Yard" [Rip 37] would be helpful.
