  • Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone

Some of you may know that British Victorian Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was born in Liverpool, on Rodney Street, which is now the street of specialist doctors akin to London's Harley Street and a street of fine Georgian homes. Retired in his final years at his estate at Hawarden near Chester he has sometimes been named as a possible Ripper suspect due to his penchant for wanting to "reform" prostitutes... but the consensus is that he was more likely at Hawarden chopping wood during the time of the murders of 1888.

The following scuttlebutt about the PM's Scottish father having owned slaves and receiving substantial compensation when slavery was ended within the British Empire was dug up by Lizzie at My Liverpool. My thanks to her.
