A hunt for Holmes

Hi all,

I don’t know if there are any serious Holmes fans on here who might be able to help. There are plenty of excellent researchers though so if someone fancies a mission......?

I’m trying to collect every available Holmes movie/tv series. I’ve got a fair collection but there’s one thing that I’m looking for information on. It’s the series of silent short movies starring Eille Norwood as Holmes. Three are available to watch on YouTube and can be bought (difficult to find the correct dvd region though)
Around a year ago I read online that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (through his ReallyUseful Company) had bought the entire Stoll film company catalogue so that he could own these Norwood/Holmes movies. It seems hard to believe that he would just buy them to stop everyone else seeing them?

Are there any other collectors or researchers who know anything about this? If this is true, does anyone know if Webber intends to release them? Or does anyone know where the series can be bought?

God bless Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber for buying and preserving these films! So many films from that era have been destroyed, discarded or self destructed. The actual film itself is unstable. So much has been lost from that era.

Perhaps he is busy restoring them. Lots of times such film needs preservation.

I have a short list of historic mysteries I always thought a good journalist could solve. One of these is the murder of William Desmond Taylor and my online incarnation began with Taylorology. (I just outed myself over there as a Ripperologist.) Anyway, many members of the group are very knowledgeable about silent films, etc. My point is, contacting people who are expert on the old silent films might also be a way to track down these films. As with any subject in the world, diligent internet search will yield groups of experts, no matter how esoteric the subject may be.
