I only just found out this dreadful news. I always enjoyed Robert's posts for his wit, erudition and intelligence, and I regret never having met him in person as I'm sure he'd have been great company. We've lost a good 'un, that's for sure, and I shall miss him terribly.

We do know of a (sort-of) "Mr Hammersmith" in connection with the Ripper case, though, namely Montague Druitt and his return ticket from Hammersmith. Perhaps the diarist read about the Druitt case and the word "Hammersmith" got lodged in his/her memory....

When two of my University friends got married, my sister, myself and some other fellow wedding-guests stayed in a large house owned by a friend of the bride's family. He was a collector of antique dildos, and there was a gigantic cabinet in the kitchen (of all places) that contained dozens of them....
